Why living in
Ciudad Vieja?
Ciudad Vieja is the historic nucleus of Montevideo, at one time surrounded by fortified walls to defend the city. Today this heart of the city remains the center of government and financial activity. Many government ministries can be found here including the main Immigrations office on Calle Misiones (for arranging residency interviews and documents.) Ciudad Vieja has undergone tremendous renovation and change over the last decade. Old squares and historic buildings have been restored, and the Pedestrian Walk~Calle Sarandí~is now alive with cafes, restaurants, craft stalls and interesting galleries and boutiques.
Montevideo's fast and efficient bus system links Ciudad Vieja to other areas of the city. Punta Carretas and Pocitos, the two most cosmopolitan mixed residence and commercial areas are less than 15 minutes away by bus. The airport is less than 45 minutes away by taxi from Ciudad Vieja.
Some of Ciudad Vieja's most interesting sites include the Solis Theater, the Sarandi Pedestrian Way, the Plazas Matriz (site of the flea market) and Zabala...and the popular Mercado del Puerto, a European style market converted into a hive of dining spots.
Living in Montevideo offers a number of modern, fully-equiped studios of one and two bedrooms on the Sarandi Pedestrian Way, several large studios & lofts overlooking the historic Plaza Zabala, and several restored homes for larger groups.
