The coastal towns and cities to the northeast of Montevideo have become tremendously popular tourist sites, especially during the January to March summer vacation period...drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors a year to beaches and resorts like Punta del Este, Piriapolis, La Barra and San Ignacio. The international jet set and those that emulate them spend the South American summer along this coast...but the rest of the year...like Spain's Costa del Sol or the Riviera slow down to become their sleepier, truer selves. Many retirees from North America and Europe have purchased homes and apartments in this area.
